Before you get Shingles, Get the Shingles Vaccine!
Herpes zoster, or Shingles, is a disease caused by the same virus as chickenpox, which results in a painful, blistering rash. Once you have had chickenpox in your lifetime, the virus stays in your body and eventually may resurface as Shingles. The painful Shingles rash can last up to 30 days, with pain lessening as the rash heals. However, some people will experience long-term nerve pain, potentially lasting for years.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 1 in 3 people will experience Shingles in their lifetime. Therefore, the CDC now strongly recommends all patients over 60 years of age receive the Shingles vaccine.
West Virginia now permits pharmacists to immunize patients against Shingles. The pharmacists at Moundsville Pharmacy are fully-certified and available to give the Shingles vaccine. Moundsville Pharmacy will consult with your doctor to see if the Shingles vaccine is right for you. Vaccines can be given Monday through Friday, 9am to 5 pm, without an appointment.
